פרק ה משנה ח
חל להיות יום אחד  If a day came
להפסיק בינתים between the two [shabbos and yom tov]
משמר שזמנו קבוע the watch whose time was set [for that shabbos]
היה נוטל עשר חלות would take ten loaves [of the Lechem HaPanim]
והמתעכב נוטל שתים and the one that stayed behind [from the previous week; took two;
ובשאר ימות השנה and the rest of the days of the year
הנכנס נוטל שש the incoming [watch] took six
והיוצא נוטל שש and the outgoing [watch] took six.
רבי יהודה אומר Rebbi Yehuda said
הנכנס נוטל שבע the incoming took seven
והיוצא נוטל חמש  and the outgoing took five.
הנכנסין חולקין בצפון The incoming would divide [their loaves] in the north [portion of the courtyard, which was more important]
והיוצאין חולקין בדרום and the outgoing would divided [their loaves] in the [less significant] south;
בלגה לעולם חולקת בדרום [however, the watch of] Bilgah always divided [their loaves] in the south
וטבעתה קבועה its ring [used to hold animals before or after for slaughter] was permanently embedded [rendering it unusable]
וחלונה סתומה and its window [to its designated storage space] was sealed.

NOTES

משנה ח

להפסיק בנתים - There are two ways to learn this mishna, bearing in mind that the watches normally changed on Shabbos.  According to the interpretation given by רע"ב, the משמר שזמנו קבוע actually refers to the two watches whose shifts were changing that shabbos, and they only divided ten loaves between them, instead of the usual twelve, while the מתעכב were those kohanim who either came early or stayed late, depending on whether yom tov was on Monday (the former) or Thursday.  The רמב"ם however says that מתעכב refers to the watch whose shift was overlapped by the yom tov, and that term reflects the fact that many fewer of them would be there for that shabbos (they were מתעכב in that they lingered at home), knowing as they did that they would have to share much of the עבודה with the many other kohanim there for the holiday.  As there were so many fewer present from this watch, the mishna teaches that they were able to make do with a smaller share of the לחם הפנים.
