חסידים ואנשי מעשה | The devout and men of [good] deeds |
היו מרקדים לפניהם | would dance before them [the assemblage] |
באבוקות של אור שבידהן | with flaming torches that were in their hands |
ואומרים לפניהן | and they said before them |
דברי שירות ותשבחות | words of songs and praises |
והלוים בכנורות | and the Leviim with harps, |
ובנבלים | lyres (instruments similar to harps but with more strings), |
ובמצלתים | cymbals, |
ובחצוצרות | trumpets, |
ובכלי שיר בלא מספר | and countless other musical instruments |
על חמש עשרה מעלות | upon fifteen steps |
היורדות מעזרת ישראל | that descended from the Israelites' Gallery |
לעזרת הנשים | to the Women's Gallery |
כנגד חמשה עשר | that corresponded to the fifteen |
שיר המעלות שבתהלים | 'songs of ascent' of Psalms, |
שעליהן | on them [the steps] |
לוים עומדין בכלי שיר | Leviim stood with musical instruments |
ואומרים שירה | and recited songs, |
ועמדו שני כהנים בשער העליון | and two Kohanim stood at the upper gate |
שיורד | that descends |
מעזרת ישראל לעזרת נשים | from the Israelites' Gallery to the Women's Gallery |
ושתי חצוצרות בידיהן | and two trumpets were in their hands, |
קרא הגבר | the Crier would call out [to signal the dawn] |
תקעו והריעו ותקעו | [and] they [these two Kohanim ] sounded a tekiah, a teruah, and a tekiah [to signal the departure of those getting the water] |
הגיעו למעלה עשירית | when they [those going to get the water] reached the tenth step |
תקעו והריעו ותקעו | they sounded a tekiah, a teruah, and a tekiah |
הגיעו לעזרה תקעו והריעו ותקעו | when they reached the [women's] gallery they sounded a tekiah, a teruah, and a tekiah |
היו תוקעין והולכין | they continued to sound a tekiah |
עד שמגיעין לשער היוצא מזרח | until they reached the gate leading out to the east. |
הגיעו לשער היוצא ממזרח | When they reached the gate leading out to the east |
הפכו פניהן למערב ואמרו | they turned to face west (i.e. towards the Beis Hamikdosh) and recited |
אבותינו היו במקום הזה | "Our fathers were in this place |
אחוריהם אל היכל | [with] their backs to the sanctuary |
ופניהם קדמה | and their faces to the east |
והמה משתחוים קדמה לשמש | and they bowed eastward to the sun |
ואנו ליה עינינו | and us, our eyes are to the Almighty"; |
רבי יהודה אומר | Rebbi Yehuda says |
היו שונין ואומרין | they repeated and said |
אנו ליה וליה עינינו | we are to the Almighty and to the Almighty are our eyes. |
פרק ה משנה ה | |
אין פוחתין מעשרים ואחת | No less than 21 |
תקיעות במקדש | tekios were sounded in the Beis Hamikdosh |
ואין מוסיפים על ארבעים ושמונה | and no more than 48. |
בכל יום היו שם | Every day there were |
עשרים ואחת תקיעות במקדש | 21 tekios: |
שלש לפתיחת שערים | 3 for the opening of the gates, |
ותשע לתמיד של שחר | 9 for the korban tomid of the morning, |
ותשע לתמיד של בין הערבים | and 9 for the korban tomid of the afternoon; |
ובמוספין היו מוסיפין עוד תשע | and with karban mussafs they added another 9; |
ובערב שבת היו מוסיפין עוד שש | and on erev Shabbos they added another 6: |
שלש להבטיל העם ממלאכה | 3 to have the people cease work |
ושלש להבדיל בין קודש לחול | and 3 to divide between the holy and mundane. |
ערב שבת שבתוך החג | On erev Shabbos during Succos |
היו שם ארבעים ושמונה | there were 48: |
שלש לפתיחת שערים | 3 for the opening of the gates, |
שלש לשער העליון | 3 for the upper gate (i.e. when the procession left to get the water), |
ושלש לשער התחתון | 3 for the lower gate (these were the blasts blown when the procession reached the Women's Gallery and continued until they reached the eastern gate) |
ושלש למילוי המים | 3 for filling of the water (i.e. when they returned with the water) |
ושלש על גבי המזבח | 3 on top of the Altar (either when the arovos were arranged around the altar or when the water was libated there), |
תשע לתמיד של שחר | 9 for the korban tomid of the morning, |
ותשע לתמיד של בין הערבים | 9 for the korban tomid of the afternoon, |
ותשע למוספין | 9 for the korban mussafs |
שלש להבטיל את העם מן המלאכה | 3 to have the people cease work |
ושלש להבדיל בין קודש לחל | and 3 to divide between the holy and mundane. |

משנה ד
אבותינו היו במקום הזה - This refers to a period of time in which some worshipped the sun, and so would disrespect the Beis Hamikdosh in the manner described.
משנה ה
תקיעות במקדש - These refers to both tekios and teruos.
