| במוצאי יום טוב הראשון של חג | On the night after the first day of yom tov of Succos |
| יורדו לעזרת נשים | they would descend to the women's gallery |
| ומתקנין שם תקון גדול | and constructed a great improvement there; |
| ומנורות של זהב היו שם | and golden candelabras were there, |
| וארבעה ספלים של זהב | with four golden bowls |
| בראשיהן | at their tops, |
| וארבעה סלמות לכל אחד ואחד | and four ladders for each, |
| וארבעה ילדים מפרחי כהונה | and four boys from the youth of the kohanim |
| ובידיהם כדים שמן | and in their hands were jars of of oil |
| של מאה ועשרים לוג | containing 120 lug |
| שהן מטילין לכל ספל וספל | that they poured into each bowl. |

| מבלאי מכנסי כהנים | From the worn out pants of the kohanim |
| ומהמיניהן | and their belts |
| מהן היו מפקיעין | they would make from them wicks |
| ובהן היו מדליקין | and they would light from them |
| ולא היתה חצר בירושלים | and there was not a courtyard on Jerusalem |
| שאינה מאירה | that was not lit |
| מאור בית השואבה | from the light of the Beis HaShoeva |

תקון גדול - What was actually built was a balcony for the women to occupy separate from the men.
ממלא מן הכיור - Even though this was a כלי שרת, there would be no לינה as it was stored overnight in a well.
