NOTES

משנה ב

רבי יהודה אומר אם אינה יכולה לעמוד בפני עצמה פסולה - This follows his opinion that a succah must be a דירת קבע, a permanent structure.

סכה המדבללת - We view the s'chach as if it is all on one level, and if arranged in that hypothetical manner they would enough to create more shade than sun, it is valid.

המעבה כמין בית - The תפארת ישראל says that this is כשר בדיעבד so long as it still allows rain to penetrate but should not be used לכתחלה.

משנה ג

ואין עולין לה ביום טוב - This is because of a אסור דרבנן prohibiting the use of trees and animals on yom tov, lest one come to break a branch [in the case of the animal, we are afraid you would break off a branch for use as a prod].

שתים באילן - According to most מפרשים, the walls are not actually formed by the tree, but rather the wall and a corresponding portion of the floor of the succah is supported by the tree, in the manner of a treehouse, while the "man-made" wall and part of the floor is built on man-made supports resting on the ground.
