80:51 A container which has a cloth wrapped round it's opening and tied
closed with a string, it's permitted to tear (the cloth) on Shabbat
because this is a destructive act and allowed for the needs of Shabbat.1
1) Tearing destructively is permitted in order to obtain something necessary for the honor or enjoyment of Shabbat. |
80:52 It's forbidden to trap any living creature on Shabbat. Even a flea
(or any other insect) is forbidden to catch. However if it's on a
person's body and is biting him, because of the bodily discomfort he's
allowed to take it and throw it away. However, it's forbidden to kill
it, because it's forbidden to kill any living creature.1 However, lice,
because they live only from the sweat, (in any event, those that (live)
in the clothes, are forbidden to kill, rather take them and throw them
away, only those which are found on the head) it's allowed to kill them.
1) Of course, one may kill on Shabbat, any animal or insect which is a danger to human life; this applies even if it's not yet near people, and even if it is in the process of escaping. When encountering animals or insects whose bite or sting causes considerable pain, but is not fatal, the following laws apply: a) If it is not pursuing anyone, but there is concern that it may do so at some stage, one may place something over it in order to trap it, or one may step on it (even with intent to kill) in the course of walking (that is, in a way that doesn't make it obvious to others that one is trying to kill it); b) If it's pursuing someone, one may kill it in any manner, if there is no other option. |
80:53 One must be careful when one wants to close a closet or an utensil
that contains fleas, that one first clears them out of there, for when
one closes it, they will be trapped inside.1 In any event, one doesn't
need to be very careful with checking that none are left inside at all,
rather clear out those that are (easily) seen by one.
1) One of the 39 Avot Melachot (prototype prohibited activity) is ''Trapping'' - ''Tzedah''. Any act through which an animal or insect becomes confined in a certain space, might be prohibited as an act of ''Trapping''.
