62:9 One needs to measure and weigh generously, so that there will be extra over
the (nominal) amount, as it is said:1 ''a full and honest measure you should
have'' What does the Talmud2 say about ''honest'' ? The Torah said ''be honest
at your own (expense) and give him (from your own). ''

צריך למדוד ולשקול בעין יפה שיהיה עודף על המדה שנאמר איפה שלמה וצדק יהיה לך מה תלמוד לומר ''וצדק'' אמרה תורה צדק משלך ותן לו |
| 62:10 One should measure according to the custom of the place and not change it. (If) the place customarily heaps up (the measure) one should not (make it) level, even if the customer wants this so as to pay less. A place where they do level measures, (one should) not heap up, even if the customer wants this and will pay more money. For the Torah is strict about false measures, because one might be mislead by seeing that one measures so, and believe that this is how one measures in this place, and measure in this way to another, who does not know this is the custom and so will be deceived. |
צריך למדוד כמנהג המדינה ולא ישנה כלל מקום שנהגו לגדוש לא ימחוק אפילו ברצון הלוקח שפיחת לו מדמים ומקום שנהגו למחוק לא יגדוש אפילו ברצון המוכר שמוסיף לו דמים כי התורה הקפידה על עוות המדות פן תצא תקלה על ידי זה שיראה הרואה שמודדין כך וידמה לו שכך היא מידת העיר וימדוד כן לאחר שאינו יודע גם כן את המנהג ויטעהו |
| 62:11 The leaders of the community are obliged to appoint supervisors who will check on the shops. Everyone they find who has a deficient measure or a deficient weight or faulty scales, they are entitled to beat him or fine him as they see fit. | חייבים ראשי הקהלה להעמיד ממונים שיהיו מחזרים על החניות וכל מי שנמצא אתו מדה חסרה או משקל חסר או מאזנים מקולקלים רשאים להכותו ולקנסו כנראה בעיניהם |
