35:2 How large must dough be to require separating challah? Any (dough) made
from five revi'im of flour. This is a measure equal to 43 and one fifth eggs.
(Refer to the rules of measuring).1
1) In modern measure, this figure is approximately 73 fluid ounces, 9.125 cups, or 131.8 cubic inches. In Hilchot Bikkurim 6:15, the Rambam elaborates further on this subject and gives a measure according to weight as well. In modern measure, the figure he gives equals approximately 1.7 kilograms (close to 4 lbs.). |

35:3 When matzot are baked for Pesach, although each dough in its own
right does not contain a measure (requiring the separation of) challah.
Nevertheless, since (afterwards) one places them (together) in a single
container, the container combines them (as a single object),1 hence,
challah must be separated from them. Care should be taken that all the
matzot are placed within the container. If part of the matzah is within
the container and part of it extends outside the container, it also is
included. However, if entire matzot are placed, only above (the walls of
the container) and not inside it, they are not included. Even covering
them with a cloth does not change (the ruling).2 However, should one
place the matzot in a sheet and cover them with a sheet, the sheet is
considered like a container, and causes them to be considered as a
single entity, even though the middle is uncovered. However, one should
take care that an entire matzah should not be outside the covering.
