193:3 The essential feature of the mitzvah of visiting the sick is, to inquire about the needs of the invalid, what is needed to be done for him, to give him the pleasure of his friend's company, and also consider his condition, and to ask for mercy on him. If one visited and didn't ask (for mercy) one didn't fulfill the mitzvah. Therefore, one doesn't visit during the first three hours of the day, since then his illness is milder on him, one doesn't feel like requesting mercy for him, and not during the last three hours of the day, since then his illness is more severe and one would despair from asking mercy for him. עיקר מצות ביקור חולים הוא לעיין בצרכי החולה מה הוא צריך לעשות לו ושימצא נחת רוח עם חביריו וגם שיתן דעתו עליו ויבקש רחמים עליו ואם ביקר ולא ביקש לא קיים את המצוה ולכן אין מבקרין בשלש שעות הראשונות של היום מפני שאז כל חולה מיקל עליו חליו ולא יחוש לבקש עליו רחמים ולא בשלש שעות אחרונות של יום שאז מכביד עליו חליו ויתיאש מלבקש עליו רחמים
193:4 When one asks for mercy for him, if we are asking in his presence, one can ask in any language he wants, for one is asking, in effect, before the Divine Presence, which is by the invalid. However, when one requests not in his presence, then the ministering angels needs to carry up one's prayer, and they don't respond to all (other) languages, so one should ask in Hebrew and include him with all the other Jewish invalids, because by including him with the others, one's prayer is better received for the sake of the many, and one says: ''The Omnipresent1 have mercy on you among all the sick of Israel'' and on Shabbat one says: ''Shabbat is for calling out and for healing to come soon, and His many mercies, and may you return in peace.''2

כשמבקש עליו רחמים אם מבקש לפניו יכול לבקש בכל לשון שירצה שהרי מבקש כביכול לפני השכינה שהיא אצל החולה אבל כשמבקש שלא בפניו דאז מלאכי השרת נזקקין להעלות תפלתו ואינם נזקקין לכל הלשונות על כן יבקש בלשון הקודש ויכלול אותו בתוך כל חולי ישראל שמתוך שכוללו עם האחרים תפלתו נשמעת יותר בזכותן של רבים ויאמר המקום ירחם עליך בתוך כל חולי ישראל ובשבת יאמר שבת היא מלזעוק ורפואה קרובה לבא ורחמיו מרובים ושבתו בשלום
193:5 The visitors should talk with him with judgement and tact, and they say to him, neither (encouraging) words about life, nor (depressing) words about death, and tell him to concern himself with his affairs, had he loaned (money) or deposited (money) with others, or others with him, and not to be afraid that because of this he may die. המבקרים ידברו אתו בהשכל ודעת ויאמרו לו לא דברים מחיים ולא דברים ממתים ויאמרו לו שיתן דעתו על עניניו אם הלוה או הפקיד אצל אחרים או אחרים אצלו ואל יפחד מפני זה מהמות
