179:3 It's forbidden to make a loan without witnesses even to a Torah scholar, unless the loan is made against a pledge.1 It is best to make the loan with a note.2

1) An object of some value which is security for the loan. 2) That details the transaction.

179:4 It's forbidden to exact payment from the borrower when one knows they cannot pay. Even to go by him is forbidden, because he will be ashamed at seeing the lender, and we don't know if he can pay. On this was said:1 ''You shall not be to him as a creditor''.

1) Exodus 22:25.

179:5 Just as it's forbidden for the lender to oppress the borrower, similarly it's forbidden for the borrower to withhold his neighbour's money when he has it,1 telling him: ''go and come again when I will have it'' as it's said:2 ''Say not to your neighbour, go and come back''.3

1) Available to pay the loan back. 2) Proverbs 3:28. 3) The verse continues '' 'and tomorrow I will give' when you have it by you.''
