166:4 Also said our sages, may their memory be for a blessing, what is
soothsaying, one who holds the eyes, meaning that he pretends to hold
the eyes of a person and closes them,1 that he covers them, that it
seems to them he seems to do wonderful and supernatural things, and
really does nothing except by sleight of hand. By trickery he fools
them, and the entertainers who do these kinds of acts at weddings
transgress a negative commandment, and the one told to do these acts
transgresses ''and before the blind''.2 Therefore one who has the
opportunity to object is obliged to object, and certainly it is
forbidden to look and watch them, but if a non-Jew is performing (these
acts) it is permitted to watch.

עוד אמרו רבותינו זכרונם לברכה איזהו מעונן זה האוחז את העינים פירוש שהוא כאלו אוחז עיני בני אדם וסוגרן שהוא מתעה אותן שנדמה להם כאלו עושה דברים נפלאים חוץ מדרך הטבע ובאמת אינו עושה כלום אלא בקלות ידיו בתחבולות הוא מתעה אותן והבדחנים שעושין כמעשים אלו על החתונות עוברים בלאו והמצוה לעשותן עובר על לפני עור ולכן מי שיש בידו למחות מחויב למחות וכל שכן שאסור להסתכל ולראותן אבל אם נכרי עושה כן מותר לראות |

166:5 It is forbidden to request anything from a witch unless one's life
is in danger, or if he became ill due to witchcraft or an evil spirit,
it is permitted to (seek) healing by a non-Jewish witch.1
1) This could be a male witch (wizard) or a female but the Rashbi (Rabbi Shimeon Bar Yochai) says (Mechilta 22:17) that most witches are female | אסור לדרוש במכשפים אלא במקום סכנת נפשות או אם בא לו איזה חולי על ידי כישוף או מקרה ורוח רעה מותר להתרפאות על ידי מכשף אינו יהודי |
| 167:1 It's forbidden to gain any benefit from idols, it, its articles, its ornaments, and its offerings. If there got mixed up with these things, even one in a thousand of permitted items, all the mixture is forbidden to have benefit from. | אלילים אסורים בהנאה היא ותשמישה ונויה ותקרובה ואם נתערב מדברים אלו אפילו אחד באלף של היתר אוסר כל התערובות בהנאה |
