147:3 The custom in these countries when marrying a virgin is for the
important people of the town to spread the veil over the bride's head
and bless her saying to her: ''Our sister, may you give life to
thousands of ten thousands'' the ''canopy'' we call what afterwards we
spread a curtain over poles and enter under it the groom and bride in
(the presence of) many and sanctify her there and make the blessings of
engagement1 and marriage, but the essential part of the wedding ceremony
is being together in private as will be explained, with G-d's help, in
the following chapter.
1) ''Eirusin'' refers to giving the ring, ''Kiddushin'' is the acceptance of the ring. ''Nissuin'' refers to sharing a home, and is symbolized by the bride and groom being alone in a room and sharing their first meal together. |
המנהג במדינות אלו בנשואי בתולה שחשובי העיר פורסין סודר על ראש הכלה ומברכים אותה ואומרים לה אחותנו את היי לאלפי רבבה וחופה קורין מה שאחר כך פורסין יריעה על גבי כלונסאות ומכניסין תחתיה החתן והכלה ברבים ומקדשה שם ומברכין ברכות אירוסין ונשואין אבל עיקר החופה הוא היחוד שיתבאר אם ירצה השם בסימן שאחר זה |

147:4 The groomsmen dress the groom in a kittel1 so that he will
remember the day of death (to come) and awaken to repentance. It is also
customary to put ashes on the groom's head where the tefillin rest, and
also customary that the fathers and (other close) relatives and men of
distinction bless the groom and the bride and pray that the union will
be successful.

| 147:5 Afterwards they lead the groom underneath the marriage canopy (and spread a curtain over poles and we call this the ''chupah'') and him facing east and the chazan then sings according to the local custom, the bridesmaids lead the bride and they are accompanied by notable people, and as they approach her they return and follow them to the marriage canopy, the bridesmaids bring the bride and with her go seven times round the groom and the chazan again sings according to the custom. Afterwards they stand the bride on the right of the groom and the one (saying) the blessings stands sideways facing the east. | אחר כך מוליכין את החתן תחת החופה שפורסין יריעה על גבי כלונסאות שאנו קורין חופה ומעמידין אותו פניו למזרח והשליח צבור מנגן המנהג המקום והשושבינות מוליכות את הכלה והשושבינים ואנשים חשובים הולכים לקראתה וכשמתקרבים אליה חוזרים לאחוריהם להחופה והשושבינות מביאין את הכלה ומסבבין עמה שבע פעמים את החתן והשליח צבור מנגן גם כן כפי המנהג אחר כך מעמידין את הכלה לימין החתן והמברך מצדד את עצמו ופניו למזרח |
