116:3 Before immersing the utensil one needs clean it thoroughly from rust and the like so that it will be completely clean, but blemishes (stains) do not matter. If there are dents in the utensil one needs to clean them thoroughly, and if it is a metal utensil one should put on the dents hot coals to glow there and afterwards immerse it. If it is impossible to clean thoroughly the dents and cracks, and also it is impossible to (put hot coals to) glow there, there is no way (it can be kashered). Therefore knives with (attached) handles one needs to be very careful to (check) whether immersion will work for them. It is best for one who can afford it that they should buy new knives for Pesach. קודם שמגעיל את הכלי צריך לנקותו היטב מן החלודה וכדומה שיהא נקי לגמרי אבל מראות כתמים אין בהם קפידה ואם יש גומות בכלי צריך לנקרם היטב ואם הוא כלי מתכות ישים על הגומות גחלים ללבן שם ואחר כך יגעילו ואם אי אפשר לנקות היטב הגומות והסדקים וגם אי אפשר ללבן שם אין לו תקנה ולכן בסכינים עם קתות צריכין לדקדק היטב אם מועיל להם הגעלה ומצוה מן המובחר למי שאפשר לו שיקנה לו סכינים חדשים לפסח
116:4 Utensils which are used on the fire without water need glowing. Also, the basins and pans which had cooked in them Chametz need glowing. The glowing needs to be at first very strong until sparks fly from it. A wooden spoon can't be kashered. כלים שמשתמשין בהם על ידי האור בלי מים צריכין ליבון ולכן האגנות והמחבות שאופין בהן חמץ צריכין ליבון והליבון צריך להיות לכתחלה ליבון חזק עד שיהיו ניצוצות נתזין ממנו והמרדה של עץ אין לה תקנה
116:5 A utensil that has a patch, if it is made such that one suspects there may be under the patch some possible Chametz, then one needs first to glow that place, until one is definitely sure that if there was there some Chametz, it was burnt and then immerse it. If there is no concern that there is there any apparent Chametz, that is the patch was made before that it was used for Chametz, it can be immersed as it is, because just as it absorbed the Chametz so will the immersion draw it out, but if it was first used as a Chametz utensil, and then afterwards the patch put on, then the immersion is ineffective for the place underneath the patch, rather one needs to also put before the immersion hot coals on the patch to glow that place. If the patch is attached with tin or silver solder or the like, it can be immersed as it is, because any absorbed Chametz was burnt then during the soldering. כלי שיש בו טלאי אם הוא בענין שיש לחוש שמא יש תחת הטלאי משהו חמץ בעין אזי צריך מקודם ללבן אותו מקום עד שידע בבירור שאם היה שם משהו חמץ היה נשרף ואחר כך יגעילו ואם אין חשש שיהא שם חמץ בעין אזי אם היה הטלאי נעשה קודם שהשתמשו בו חמץ יכול להגעילו כמו שהוא דכמו שבלע את החמץ כך יפליטו בהגעלה אבל אם נשתמש תחלה בהכלי חמץ ואחר כך נתנו את הטלאי אזי לא מהני ליה ההגעלה למקום שתחת הטלאי אלא צריך ליתן גם כן קודם ההגעלה גחלים על הטלאי ללבן את המקום ההוא ואם הטלאי נתחבר בהתכת בדיל או כסף וכדומה יכול להגעילו כמו שהוא כי בליעת החמץ נשרפה אז בהתכה
