| עריס שהוא יוצא מן המדרגה | If an עריס extends from a terrace |
| רבי אליעזר בן יעקב אומר | R' Eliezer ben Yaakov says |
| אם עומד בארץ | if one can stand stand on the ground [below the terrace] |
| ובוצר את כולו | and can pick the whole [עריס] |
| הרי זה אוסר ארבע אמות בשדה | this prohibits four אמות in the filed [below the terrace] |
| ואם לאו אינו אוסר אלא כנגדו | and if not, it prohibits only opposite it |
| רבי אליעזר אומר | R' Eliezer says |
| אף הנוטע אחת בארץ | also if one plants one in the ground |
| ואחת במדרגה | and one in the terrace |
| אם גבוהה מן הארץ עשרה טפחים | if it [the terrace] is ten טפחים above the ground |
| אינה מצטרפת עימה | it does not combine with it |
| ואם לאו הרי זו מצטרפת עימה | and if not it does combine with it |
| פרק ו - משנה ג | |
| המדלה את הגפן | One who trains a grapevine |
| על מקצת אפיפירות | on part of a lattice |
| לא יביא זרע תחת המותר | he should not bring [other] seeds under the rest [of the lattice] |
| ואם הביא לא קידש | but if he did bring it, it is not condemned |
| ואם הלך החדש אסור | but if [the vine has] new growth that extended [over a new part of the lattice] it is prohibited |
| וכן המדלה על מקצת אילן סרק | and likewise if one trains [a vine] on part of a barren tree |
NOTES
משנה ב
עריס שהוא יוצא מן המדרגה - It is assumed that the עריס here is the normal support structure for grapevines, a horizontal frame or lattice supported by vertical poles which the vines are trained to climb upon. A מדרגה is a step; here it is referring to an elevated earthen formation shaped like a step, presumably with a nearly vertical slope.
ואם לאו אינו אוסר אלא כנגדו - That is to say, what is directly under the עריס.
אף הנוטע אחת בארץ - According to the רע"ב, this part of the משנה is no longer referring to עריסים, but to a pair of rows of vines that, if מצתרף, form a כרם.
משנה ג
אפיפירות - These are the girders and rafters of the pergola-like structures that grapevines are usually trained on (a opposed to the vertical poles).
המדלה את הגפן - The משנה ראשונה notes that this is not necessarily referring to an עריס of multiple vines, but even where a solitary vine is climbing on part of a beam, one cannot plant anything else under the rest of the beam.
