| עוקר שתי שורות ונוטע שורה אחת | uproot two rows [of onions] and plant one row [of gourds in their place], |
| ומניח קמת בצלים במקום שתי שורות | and leave [the next] two rows of onions standing, |
| ועוקר שתי שורות ונוטע שורה אחת | and uproot [the next] two rows [of onions] and plant one row [of gourds in their place] |
| רבי עקיבה אומר | R' Akiva says |
| עוקר שתי שורות ונוטע שתי שורות | uproot two rows [of onions] and plant two rows [of gourds] |
|
ומניח קמת בצלים במקום שתי שורות |
and leave two rows of onions standing |
| ועוקר שתי שורות ומניח שתי שורות | and uproot two rows and plant two rows; |
| וחכמים אומרים | and the Sages say |
| אם אין בין שורה לחברתה | if there is not between one row to the next |
| שתים עשרה אמה | twelve אמות |
| לא יקיים את הזרע שבינתיים | he may not sustain the plants that are in the middle |
| פרק ג - משנה ז | |
| דלעת בירק כירק | Gourds in vegetables are like vegetables, |
| ובתבואה נותנין לה בית רובע | in grain we give it a בית רובע; |
| היתה שדהו זרועה תבואה | if his field was planted with grain |
| ומבקש ליטע בתוכה שורה של דלועין | and he wants to plant in it a row of gourds |
| נותנין לה לעבודתה ששה טפחים | we give for its workspace six טפחים |
| וואם הגדילה יעקור מלפניה | but if it [the gourds] grows large [so that it and/or its branches encroaches on this workspace] he must uproot before it [that part which is encoraching]; |
| רבי יוסי אומר | R' Yose says |
| נותנין לה עבודתה ארבע אמות | we give it for its work four אמות of workspace |
| אמרו לו התחמיר זו מן הגפן | They said to him: you would be more stringent with this than with a grapevine? |
| אמר להם מצינו שזו חמורה מן הגפן | He said to them: you will find that this is more stringent that a grapevine |
| שגפן יחידית | for a single grapevine |
| נותנין לה עבודתה שישה טפחים | we give a workspace of six טפחים |
| ודלעת יחידית | and a single gourd |
| נותנין לה עבודתה בית רובע | we give a [much larger] workspace of a בית רובע |
| רבי מאיר אומר משום רבי ישמעאל | R' Meir said in the name of R' Yishmael |
| כל שלושה דלועין לבית סאה | For every three gourds in a בית סאה |
| לא יביא זרע לתוך בית סאה | no other seeds may be planted in that בית סאה; |
| רבי יוסי בן החוטף אפרתי אומר משום רבי ישמעאל | R' Yose ben Hachotef Efroso said in the name of R' Yishmael |
| כל שלושה דלועין לבית כור | For every three gourds in a בית כור [which is 30 times larger than a בית סאה] |
| לא יביא זרע לתוך בית כור | o other seeds may be planted in that בית כור |
NOTES
משנה ו
עוקר שתי שורות ונוטע שורה אחת - According to the רמב"ם and the רע"ב each row of vegetables is four אמות wide; by replacing two rows with one, the new single row will have a buffer of two אמות on each side.
עוקר שתי שורות ונוטע שתי שורות - Note that according to R' Akiva, the rows of onions must still be separated with a furrow from the rows of gourds (again, this is according to the רמב"ם and the רע"ב).
אם אין בין שורה לחברתה - According to the רמב"ם and the רע"ב, the Sages merely require that twelve אמות of space be between the rows of gourds, which can be occupied by three rows of onions (at four אמות per row). The difference in the two schools of thought is as follows: R' Yishmael holds that a furrow alone is not enough to separate gourds form onions, and a two אמה gap is required as well, while the Sages say that only a furrow is needed; however both hold that each row of gourds must be at least twelve אמות from the other.
משנה ז
דלעת בירק כירק - When planting a single gourd amongst vegetables, the standard work space left between vegetables, six טפחים, must be maintained.
ובתבואה נותנין לה בית רובע - This is the workspace left for grain, which must be left around a gourd planted in grains.
נותנין לה לעבודתה ששה טפחים - The smaller space is allowed because an entire row is considered easier to distinguish than a single gourd.
התחמיר זו מן הגפן - In many significant respects, כלאי ברם seems to be treated more stringently for it has a אסור הנאה which other forms of כלאים do not.
