A bachelor should not be used to being

among teachers of young children

and a woman should not be used to being among teachers of young children.

Rabbi Eliezar says

also one who does not have a wife (e.g. a widower or someone separated from his wife)

should not be used to being with teachers of young children.

Rabbi Yehuda says

a bachelor should not herd cattle

and two bachelors should not sleep

in one cover

and the Sages permit it.

All whose business [requires them to constantly interact] with women

should not be secluded with women,

and a person should not teach his son

a trade [which requires him to be constantly] among women.

Rabbi Meir says

A person should always teach his son

a clean and easy trade

and pray to He

to Whom wealth and property belongs,

as there is not trade

that does not include poverty and wealth

as poverty does not come from the trade

and wealth does not come from the trade

rather all is a result of one's merit.

Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar says

Have you ever seen in your life a wild animal or bird

that has a trade?

And yet they are sustained without grief.

And were they not created

only to serve me,

and I was created

to serve my Master.

Does it not follow then that I should be sustained

without grief?

However as I have degraded my deeds

I I have robbed myself of sustenance.

Abba Guryan of Tzaydyan says,

according to Abba Gurya,

a person should not teach his son to be

a donkey driver, camel driver,

[potter]

sailor, shepherd,

or shopkeeper

as their trades are the trades of robbers.

Rabbi Yehuda says in his name

Most donkey drivers are wicked,

most camel drivers are worthy,

most sailors are pious,

the best doctors are going to Gehinnom

and the most worthy of slaughterers

is partners with Amalek.

Rabbi Nehorai says

I put aside

every trade in the world

and I teach my son

only Torah,

for a person enjoys its profit

in this world

and the principal remains for the world to come,

and all the other trades are not like that;

when a man becomes subject to illness

or subject to dotage

or subject to hardships

and he is not able to do work his trade

he thereby dies of starvation;

but the Torah is not like that,

rather it guards him from all evils

in one's youth

and gives him a future and hope

in his dotage.

Regarding his youth, what does it say?

"Those who await Hashem shall renew their strength,"

Regarding one's dotage what does it say?

"They will still bear fruit in their old age."

And do it says

regarding our father Abraham, peace be upon him

"And Abraham was old . . .

and Hashem blessed Abraham with all,"

we find that our father Abraham fulfilled

the entire complete Torah

before it was given

as it says

"Because Abraham listened to My voice

and he kept My observances,

My commandments, My decrees and My Torah."

NOTES

This is because they must often mix with women who bring their children to learn.

The reason for this prohibition is the same apprehension of the intermingling of men and women.

He may not be secluded even with many at once, as we fear that due to their familiarity and friendliness with him, they will more easily allow his misdeeds to pass unreported.

. . שאמנותן אמנות לסטים - These tradesmen were thought to engage in thievery.  In the case of camel and donkey drivers, [and potters, according to those that are גורס the word ספר], they were suspected of stealing supplies from other peoples properties in their travels, or failing to honor their agreements.  Shepherds were similarly suspected of grazing their flocks on others' land, and shopkeepers would water down wine or mix pebbles into the grain that they sold.

Due to the dangers that these people faced in the course of their work, their consciences were more likely to be lead them to act properly.

טוב שברופאים לגהינם - Either due to the arrogance that their profession inferred upon them, or because they would sometimes cause harm to their patients, or because they refused to treat those who could not afford to pay them.

Such work led one to become callous and cruel.
