| טיפת חלב | A drop of milk, |
| שנפלה על החתיכה | that fell on a piece [of meat cooking in a pot with other pieces of meat, and the piece of meat that the milk fell on is completely outside of the broth in the pot], |
| אם יש בה בנותן טעם | if there is enough of it to impart flavor |
| באותה חתיכה | to that piece, |
| אסור | [the entire piece] is prohibited (but in any event, so long as the pot is not stirred or covered, the rest of its contents are permissible). |
| נער את הקדרה | If he stirred the pot, |
| אם יש בה בנותן טעם | if there is enough of it [the milk] to impart flavor |
| באותה הקדרה | into that pot |
| אסור | it [the contents of the pot] is forbidden. |
| הכחל | The udder, |
| קורעו ומוציא את חלבו | he must tear it open and extract the milk, |
| לא קרעו | if he did not tear it open [and cooked the udder with its contents], |
| אינו עובר עליו | he has not transgressed on it [the prohibition of cooking milk with meat] (milk inside the udder at the time of slaughter is only forbidden to be cooked with meat by rabbinic decree). |
| הלב | The heart (which aside from the blood in its tissue, which can be removed by salting, also contains blood that collects in its cavity, which cannot be removed by salting), |
| קורעו ומוציא את דמו | he must rip it open and extract its blood, |
| לא קרעו | if he did not rip it open (and ate the heart with the blood in its cavity), |
| אינו עובר עליו | he has not transgressed on it (a prohibition punishable by kares, as this mishna refers to the heart of a bird, which contains less than an olive's volume of blood). |
| המעלה את העוף עם הגבינה | One who brings up (i.e. put) a bird with cheese |
| על השולחן | on a table |
| אינו עובר בלא תעשה | has not transgressed a negative commandment. |

פרק ח משנה ד |
|
| בשר בהמה טהורה | The meat of a kosher animal |
| בחלב בהמה טהורה | with the milk of a kosher animal |
| אסור לבשל | is prohibited to be cooked, |
| ואסור בהנאה | and it is forbidden to derive benefit [from such a combination]. |
| בשר בהמה טהורה | The meat of a kosher animal |
| בחלב בהמה טמאה | with the milk of a non-kosher animal, |
| בשר בהמה טמאה | or the meat of a non-kosher animal |
| בחלב בהמה טהורה | with the meat of a kosher animal |
| מותר לבשל ומותר בהנאה | may be cooked and may be benefited from. |
| רבי עקיבה אומר | Rabbi Akiva says |
| חיה ועוף אינם מן התורה | wild animals and birds are not [prohibitted] by the Torah, |
| שנאמר | as it says |
| לא תבשל גדי בחלב אימו | "You shall not cook a kid in its mother's milk" |
| שלש פעמים | three times |

| פרט לחיה | This is to exclude (i) wild animals, |
| ולעוף | (ii) birds, |
| ולבהמה טמאה | and (iii) non-kosher animals. |
| רבי יוסי הגלילי אומר | Rabbi Yosi Haglili says |
| נאמר לא תאכלו כל נבילה | it says "You shall not eat any neveilah" |

| ונאמר לא תבשל גדי בחלב אימו | and it says "You shall not cook a kid in its mother's milk," |

| תלמוד לומר בחלב אימו | so it teaches us by saying "in the milk of its mother", |
| יצא העוף | excluding birds, |
| שאין לו חלב אם | that do not have mother's milk. |
