| השוחט במגל יד | One who slaughters with a hand-sickle (which has both a straight edged blade as well as a serrated one, the former of which was used for this slaughter), |
| בצור | with a flint, |
| ובקנה | or with a reed, |
| שחיטתו כשרה | his slaughtering is valid. |
| הכל שוחטין | All may slaughter, |
| ולעולם שוחטין | may always slaughter, |
| ובכל שוחטין | and may slaughter with everything, |
| חוץ ממגל קציר | except with a harvesting sickle [which has only a serrated blade], |
| והמגרה | a saw, |
| והשינים | teeth, |
| והציפרן | and a [finger or toe] nail, |
| מפני שהן חונקין | because they strangle (i.e. they do not kill with a clean slice, but rather tear or otherwise disfigure the flesh). |
| השוחט במגל קציר | One who slaughters with a harvesting sickle |
| בדרך הליכתה |
with a forward motion (i.e. in the direction of its teeth, rather than with a drawing motion, which would go against the direction of its teeth) |
| בית שמאי פוסלין | Beis Shammai invalidate |
| ובית הלל מכשירין | and Beis Hillel validate. |
| אם החליקו שניה |
If they smoothed out its teeth |
| הרי היא כסכין | it is as a knife. |

| השוחט מתוך הטבעת | One who slaughters (by cutting) from within the ring (i.e. the uppermost ring of cartilage surrounding the trachea) |
| ושיר בה מלא החוט | and leaves of it a threads-breadth |
| על פני כולה | along its entirety, |
| שחיטתו כשרה | his slaughtering is valid. |
| רבי יוסי בר יהודה אומר | Rabbi Yosi bar Yehuda says |
| מלא החוט על פני רובה | [if he left] a threads-breadth along most of it |
| שחיטתם כשרה | his slaughtering is valid. |
