One may not take wood from a hut but only from [what is] adjacent to it. One may bring in from the field [fire-] wood that is gathered together, and from a karpif [an enclosure] even though it is scattered about. What is a karpif? Any [enclosure] adjoining the town; this is the opinion of R. Judah. R. Jose says: any [enclosure] which one enters with a key, even if it is [only just] within a Sabbath tehum. |

4.2 אין נוטלין עצים מן הסוכה, אלא מן הסמוך לה׃ ומביאים עצים מן השדה מן המכונס, ומן הקרפף ואפילו מן המפוזר׃ איזה הוא קרפף, כל שהוא סמוך לעיר, דברי רבי יהודה; רבי יוסי אומר, כל שנכנסים לו בפותחת, ואפילו בתוך תחום השבת |

One may not chop up firewood from beams nor from a beam which was broken
on a festival; and one may not chop either with an axe or with a saw or
with a sickle but only with a [butcher`s] chopper. If a [closed] room full of produce was burst open [on a festival] He may take [the produce] out through the breach. R. Meir says: He may make a hole at the outset and bring out [the produce]. |
