| He who slaughters game on poultry on a festival-day, Beth Shammai say: He may dig up [earth] with a shovel and cover [the blood], but Beth Hillel maintain: one may not slaughter unless he has [loose] earth prepared from the day before [the festival]; but they agree that if he has [already] slaughtered, he may dig up [earth] with a shovel and cover [the blood], because the Ashes of the hearth are mukan [considered as having been prepared]. |
ביצה 1.2 השוחט חיה ועוף ביום טוב-- בית שמאי אומרין, יחפור בדקר ויכסה׃ בית הלל אומרין, לא ישחוט, אלא אם כן היה לו עפר מוכן׃ מודים, שאם שחט, שיחפור בדקר ויכסה; ושאפר הכירה מוכן |

Beth Shammai say: one may not carry a ladder [on a festival] from one
dovecote to another, but he may incline it from one pigeon-hole to
another. But Beth Hillel permit [this]. Beth Shammai say: one must not take [pigeons] unless he has stirred [them] up the day before [the festival]: but Beth Hillel say: He stands and declares: this one or that one will I take. |
