אל תבקש גדולה לעמך

Do not seek greatness for yourself,

ואל תחמוד כבוד

do not covet honor,

יותר מלמודך עשה

do more than you learn,

ואל תתאוה לשלחנם

and do not desire the tables

של שרים

of rulers,

ששלחנך גדול משלחנם

as your table is greater than their tables,

וכתרך גדול מכתרם

and your crown is greater than their crowns,

ונאמן הוא בעל מלכתך

and your employer is trustworthy

שישלם לך שכר פעולתך

to pay you the reward of your work.

ו

גדולה תורה יותר מן הכהונה

Torah is greater than the priesthood

ומן המלכות

and from kingship,

שהמלכות נקנית בשלשים מעלות

as the kingship is acquired with thirty attributes

והכהונה בעשרים וארבע

the priesthood with twenty-four,

והתורה נקנית בארבעים ושמונה דברים

and the Torah is acquired with forty-eight things

ואלו הן

and they are:

בתלמוד

{1} with study;

בשמיעת האזן

{2} with careful listening;

בעריכת שפתים

{3} with articulation;

בבינת הלב

{4} with understanding of the heart,

בשכלות הלב

with reasoning of the heart;

באמה ביראה

{5} with awe, with fear;

בענוה בשמחה

{6} with humility; {7} with joy;

בטהרה בשמוש חכמים

{8} with purity; {9} with attending to sages;

בדקדוק חברים

{10} with scrupulousness [in choosing] colleagues;

בפלפול התלמידים

{11} with the dialectics of students;

בישוב במקרא

{12} with clarity (or with calmness); {13} with reading (or with scripture),

במשנה במעוט סחורה

with learning (or with Mishnah); {14} with lessening business;

במעוט דרך ארץ

{15} with lessening worldly occupation (or with lessening socializing);

במעוט תענוג במעוט שנה

{16} with lessening  pleasure; {17} with lessening sleep;

במעוט שיחה במעוט שחוק

{18} with lessening conversation; {19} with lessening laughter;

בארף אפים בלב טוב

{20} with patience; {21} with a good heart;

בטמונת חכמים

{22} with belief in sages;

בקבלת היסורין

{23} with acceptance of tribulations;

המכיר את מקומו

{24} one who recognizes his place;

והשמח בחלקו

{25} one who is happy with his lot;

והעושה סיג לדבריו

{26} one who make a fence about his words (or matters);

ואינו מחזיק טובה לעצמו

{27} does not take credit for himself;

אהוב אוהב את המקום

{28} is beloved; {29} loves the Omnipresent;

אוהב את הבריות

{30} loves all creations;

אוהב את הצדקות

{31} loves righteousness;

אוהב את המישרים

{32} loves the upright;

אוהב את התוכחות

{33} loves rebukes;

ומתרחק מן הכבוד

{34} is distanced from honor;

ולא מגיס לבו בתלמודו

{35} does not become haughty with his learning;

ואינו שמח בהוראה

{36} does not take joy in issuing halachic decisions;

נושא בעל עם חברו

{37} shares in the burden of his colleague;

ומכריעו לכף זכות

{38} judges favorably;

ומעמידו על האמת

{39} stands for the truth;

ומעמידו על השלום

{40} stands for peace;

ומתישב לבו בתלמודו

{41} is set in his study;

שואל ומשיב

{42} asks and answers;

שומע ומוסיף

{43} hears and adds;

הלומד על מנת ללמד

{44} one who learns for the sake of teaching;

{45} one who learns for the sake of acting;

{46} one who makes his teacher wiser;

{47} one who focuses on his words;

{48} and one who says something in the name of the one who [originally] said it.

For you have learned

any who says something in the name of the one who [originally] said it

brings redemption to the world,

as it says:

"And Esther said the the king

in the name of Mordechai."
