Any who cause the public to gain credit

will not have an opportunity to sin,

and any who cause the public to sin

will not have the opportunity

to repent.

Moshe earned credit,

and brought about credit for the public,

[and so] the credit of the public was placed on him,

as it says:

"He did the righteousness of God

and His laws with Israel."

Yerovom sinned

and caused the public to sin

[and so] the sin of the public was placed on him,

as it says:

"For the sins of Yerovom

that he sinned

and that he caused Israel to sin."

Any who possesses

these three things

is from the disciples of Avrohom our father

and three other things

מתלמידיו של בלעם הרשע 

is from the disciples of Bilaam the wicked;

a good eye,

ורוח נמוכה

a humble spirit,

ונפש שפלה 

and a reserved spirit

an evil eye,

a haughty spirit,

and a wide spirit (i.e. one with an excessive appetites for physical pleasure)

is from the disciples of Bilaam the wicked.

What is the difference between the disciples of Avrohom our father

and the disciples of Bilaam the wicked?

The disciples of Avrohom our father

אוכלין בעולם הזה

eat in this world

ונוחלין בעולם הבא

and inherit the World to Come,

שנאמר

as it says:

להנחיל אהבי יש

"To those who love me I have what to bequeth

and their storehouses I shall fill."

אבל תלמידיו של בלעם הרשע 

But the disciples of Bilaam the wicked

יורשין גיהנם

inherit Gehinnom

and descend to the underworld,

שנאמר

as it says

ואתה אלהים

"And you, Lord

תורדם לבאר שחת

will lower them to the underworld,

אנשי דמים ומרמה

men of blood and deception

לא יחצו ימיהם

shall not cross over half of their days,

ואני אבטח בך

and I believe in You.
