הם אמרו שלשה דברים |
They would say three things. |
רבי אליעזר אומר |
Rabbi Eliezer said: |
יהי כבוד חברך |
"Your colleague's honor should be |
חביב עליך כשלך |
as dear to you as yours |
ואל תהי נוח לכעוס |
and do not be easy to anger; |
ושוב יום אחד לפני מיתתך |
repent one day before you die; |
והוי מתחמם |
and warm yourself |
כנגד אורן של חכמים |
opposite the fire of the Sages, |
והוי זהיר בגחלתן |
but be careful with their coals |
שלא תכוה |
lest you be burned, |
שנשיכתן נשיכת שועל | as their bite is the bite of the fox, |
ועקיצתן עקיצת עקרב | their sting is the sting of the scorpion, |
ולחישתן לחישת שרף | and their hiss is the hiss of serpent |
וכל דבריהם כגחלי אש | and all their words are as coals of fire." |

רבי יהושע אומר | Rabbi Yehoshua said: |
עין הרע | "An evil eye, |
ויצר הרע | the evil inclination |
ושנאת הבריות | and hatred of people |
מוציאין את האדם | remove a man |
מן העולם | from the world." |
