Yehuda ben Tabbai |
| ושמעון בן שטח | and Shimon ben Shatach |
| קבלו מהם | received [the mesorah] from them [Yehoshua ben Perechya and Nittai the Arbelite]. |
Yehuda ben Tabbai would say: |
Do not make yourself |
as an organizer of judges (some interpret this as discouraging a judge from providing legal advice to a litigant; other say it disapproves of improperly behaving as if one were an eminent halachic authority), |
| וכשיהיו בעלי דינין | and when litigants |
| עומדים לפניך | are standing before you |
| יהיו בעיניך כרשעים | they should [both] be in your eyes as if guilty, |
| וכשנפטרים מלפניך | and when they depart from before you |
| יהיו בעיניך כזכאין | they should [both] be in your eyes as if guiltless |
| כשקבלו עליהם את הדין | when they have accepted upon themselves the verdict." |

|
Shimon ben Shatach would say: |
One should extensively |
| והוי זהיר בדבריך | and be careful with your words (i.e. do not ask leading questions) |
| שמא מתוכם ילמדו לשקר | lest they learn from them to lie." |
