| איש צרדה | man of Tzredah, |
| ויוסי בן יוחנן | and Yosi ben Yochanan, |
| איש ירושלים | man of Jerusalem, |
| קבלו מהם | received [the mesorah] from them [Antigenos and Shimon the Righteous]. |
| יוסי בן יועזר | Yosi ben Yoezer |
| איש צרדה | man of Tzredah, |
| אומר | would say: |
| יהי ביתך | "Your house should be |
| בית ועד לחכמים | a house of meeting for the sages, |
| והוי מתאבק | and you should be dusty |
| בעפר רגליהם | with the dust of their feet, |
| והוי שותה בצמא | and drink with thirst |
| את דבריהם | their words." |

פרק א משנה ה |
|
| יוסי בן יוחנן | Yosi ben Yochanan |
| איש ירושלים | man of Jerusalem |
| אומר | would say: |
| יהי ביתך פתוח לרוחה | "Your house should be open wide |
| ויהיו עניים בני ביתך | and paupers should be members of your household, |
| ואל תרבה שיחה | and do not speak excessively |
| עם האשה | with the woman." |
| באשתו אמרו | This was said in reference to his wife, |
| קל וחמר | so much the more so |
| באשת חברו | with the wife of his colleague. |
| מכאן אמרו חכמים | From this the Sages said that |
| כל זמן | any time |
| שאדם מרבה שיחה | that a man speaks excessively |
| עם האישה | with the woman, |
| גורם רעה לעצמו | he causes evil to himself |
| ובוטל מדברי תורה | and is removed from matters of Torah, |
| וסופו יורש גיהנם | and ultimately will inherit Gehenim. |
